History

The present Department of English and Literary Studies was formerly known as Modern European Languages. It was established in 1976, along with the Faculty of Arts as well as other departments and faculties in the University of Ilorin. As the Department of Modern European Languages, it housed English, French and German programmes. In 2004, it became the Department of English, when the French arm was granted its own autonomy as a department.
The first Head of the Department was the Late Professor David Cook, who, along with Prof O. Obafemi, Mrs Adekumbi Ofuya, Late Professors S. Adewoye and E. Adegbija, formed the foundation staff. Since then, the staff strength has grown to its present number of 20.
